The fluid consists of saline and a dilute solution of adrenalin and local anesthetic. When the tissues are introduced to this solution, it facilitates fat removal, reduces bleeding, and eliminates the need for general anesthesia since there is a large amount of local anesthesia introduced into the area. The tumescent technique for liposuction requires three times amount of fluid being injected than what is being aspirated. Since the local anesthesia used in the tumescent technique lasts longer, the procedure is less painful and more pleasant than liposuction techniques that use general anesthesia or IV sedation. However this technique does have it share of possible risks and complications. The fluid overloading involved in the tumescent technique is relatively safe. However there have been reports of congestive heart failure as well as toxic effects from the local anesthesia.
